Square Panda

Square Panda presents early reading curriculum to children in a fun and unique way by tapping into their natural curiosity with fun games that will keep them laughing and learning.

  •      Multisensory tactile letter toys: fusing tactile letter objects with a multisensory digital experience utilizing the different senses: visual, auditory, tactile and kinesthetic modalities to differentiate play/learning experiences. Multisensory instruction yields changes in the way the brain is processing information, activating deeper cognition and strengthening learner engagement levels. Connecting new and previous established learning with active responses are more effective than rote learning or memorization.
  •     Humor: incorporates humorous characters and game play. Humor activates our sense of curiosity, which is where learning begins, so its logical that humor could enhance retention and extend the learning/play connection. Neuroscience research shows that humor activates the brain's dopamine reward system, and cognitive studies show that dopamine is able to promote enthusiasm and long-term retention of information.

  •      Endless entertainment & reiteration: Engagement is the cornerstone for success in the digital space. When students are engaged, it’s much easier for them to learn and grow. Square Panda is developing high end educational apps that prove to engage children again and again. Repetition or reiteration is essential for children to master any concept, a one-time experience is not enough long term retention. Children need repeated exposure to an experience. Each time an experience is repeated the neural connection grows stronger. Children need similar experiences to gain automaticity in fluency and word recognition.  Square Panda’s instructional games present children with each word repeated three times to aid in memorization and mastery.

  •      Exploratory play:  By having open-ended exploratory games with no “right or wrong” answer this helps encourage children to have empowering play experiences. Exploration and trial and error are learning styles that are rewarded with intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation refers to motivation that comes from inside an individual rather than from any external or outside rewards. Engaging in the enjoyment of an activity for the sake of the activity itself. This supports learning of all kinds and builds confidence.
  •      Curriculum and Instructional pedagogy:

Square Panda has also developed a Bowling game that teaches phonetics in an explicit, sequential manner. Our systematic scope and sequence has been designed in-house using the most current research. According to the National Reading Panel, the goal in all good phonics programs is to “enable learners to acquire sufficient knowledge and use of the alphabetic code so that they can make normal progress to read and comprehend written language. Recent research reviews (National Reading Panel, 2000; Stahl, Duffy-Hester, & Stahl, 1998) have suggested that the most effective phonics instruction is planned and sequential, explicit and systematic. Phonics instruction should be both explicit and systematic. It is explicit in that letter-sound relationships are directly taught. It is systematic in that it follows a scope and sequence that allows children to form and read words early on. The skills taught are constantly reviewed and applied to real reading.
